SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE ON THE LITHOSPHERE (SCL)
Introduction
The
establishment of Inter-Union Commission on the Lithosphere was approved in 1980
at the XVIII General Assembly of ICSU with the objective of undertaking an international
programme of interdisciplinary research for an improved understanding of the Earth,
especially those aspects on which human society depends for its well-being. The
programme is primarily concerned with the current state, origin, evolution and
the dynamics of the lithosphere, with special attention to the continents and
their margins. One special goal is to strengthen the Earth sciences and to make
their application in the developing countries more effective. The parent Unions
of ICL are IUGG and IUGS.
