General Medal & Lecture Awards

The Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman Medal

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Medal

Procedure for Selection and Other Conditions

The above Medals shall be awarded every two years for outstanding contributions in any branch of science coming within the purview of the Academy.
Two out of the four General Medals will be awarded each year, one in biological sciences and the other in physical sciences. Thus, in the year 1991, CV Raman Medal and SS Bhatnagar Medal will be awarded and in 1992 Meghnad Saha Medal and Aryabhata Medal will be awarded. The same cycle will then be repeated.
The President, INSA, shall suggest, for consideration by the Council, names at a meeting of the Council to be held in January of the year of the award and the name selected by the Council shall be announced at the Anniversary General Meeting.
The person to whom the award is made may be requested to deliver a public lecture on the subject of his work normally at the Annual General Meeting of the Academy of the year to which the award relates or at one of the General Meetings of the Academy convenient to him. The summary of the award lecture will be published in INSA News.
The presentation of the General medals will be made to the recipients at the Annual General Meeting of the year of the award or at the General Meeting at which he/she delivers the lecture.
The award will consist of a Copper medal (gold plated). (Procedure for selection and other conditions)
TA/DA will be paid to the Awardee for delivering the award lecture.

INSA Medal for Promotion & Service to Science

The Medal was established by the Academy in the year 2001 for purpose of recognising those who have rendered exceptional service for promoting science in India.

Procedure for Selection and Other Conditions

The Medal shall be awarded once in every two years for exceptional service to promoting Science in India. The prize is open to any Indian national and will carry a gold medal of 20 gram weightage and designed suitably after consulting a jeweller.
The President, INSA, shall suggest, for consideration by the Council, names at a meeting of the Council to be held in December/January prior to year of the award and the name selected by the Council shall be announced at the Anniversary General Meeting.
The person selected for the award shall deliver a public lecture on the subject of his/her choice during year of award under aegis of INSA Local Chapter. The presentation of award will be made at time when the recipient delivers the lecture.
TA/DA will be paid to the awardee for delivering award lecture.

The Sisir Kumar Mitra Memorial Lecture
The lecture was established in the year 1963 from the General Funds of the Academy in the memory of late Professor Sisir Kumar Mitra, a Foundation Fellow and past President of the Academy. The first award was made in the year 1966.

The Kariamanikkam Srinivasa Krishnan Memorial Lecture

The lecture was established in the year 1965 from the General Funds of the Academy in the memory of late Professor Kariamanikkam Srinivasa Krishnan, a Foundation Fellow and past President of the Academy. The first award was made in the year 1969.

Effective from 1992, the above two awards will be made once in three years (one each for Biological and Physical Sciences) for outstanding contributions in any branch of science coming within the purview of the Academy.

The Daulat Singh Kothari Memorial Lecture
The lecture was established in the year 1993 from the General Funds of the Academy in the memory of the late Professor Daulat Singh Kothari, an esteemed Fellow and a past President of the Academy. The first award was made in the year 1996 and thereafter repeated every three years.

Procedure for Selection and Other Conditions


  • The President, INSA, shall suggest, for consideration by the Council, names at a meeting of the Council to be held in December/January and the names selected by the Council shall be announced at the Anniversary General Meeting.
  • The person to whom the award is made may be requested to deliver a public lecture on the subject of his work under the aegis of INSA Local Chapter. The summary of the award lecture will be included in INSA News.
  • The presentation of the award will be made to the recipient after he/she delivers the lecture. The lecturer will be paid Rs 5,000/- as honorarium besides travelling and halting expenses for journey performed to deliver the lecture.
Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Lecture
The lecture was established in 1989 from the general funds of the Academy. Two lectureships are awarded every year to Indian scientists. The Lecturers will be paid cash Award of Rs 5,000/- each and TA/DA for the journey performed for delivering the award lectures. The first award was made in the year 1990.

Procedure for Selection and Other Conditions


President, INSA, shall suggest names for consideration by Council at its meeting to be held in October preceding the year of awards. The names selected by the Council shall be announced at the Annual General Meeting of the Academy.

The person/s selected for the lecture award shall deliver a public lecture on the subject of his/her choice during the year of the award under the aegis of INSA Local Chapter.

The presentation of the awards will be made at the time when the recipients deliver the award lecture.
